Total cost of participation includes tuition, housing, meals, airfare, travel visa, passport, incidentals, books, transportation, program excursions and activities, domestic and international health insurance, and campus fees.

All UCSC Global Virtual Internships, UCSC Global Seminars, UCSC Exchanges, UCDC, and UCEAP programs come with a total cost of participation budget available online to review.

Personal Costs

Include:

  • Travel during free time
  • Entertainment
  • Shopping

Make a plan for how you will cover these costs, which are not included in the total cost of participation.

There are many locations where you can study abroad or away and the cost-of-living is lower than at UC Santa Cruz. You can review UCSC's cost of attendance on the Financial Aid webpage. Compare the cost of each program below.

Non-Resident Students

Students attending UCSC are required to pay non-resident supplemental tuition for programs during Fall, Winter, and Spring terms for UC programs. Summer term UC programs do not have non-resident supplemental tuition fees. Independent Programs also do not require non-resident supplemental tuition fees. Often, Independent Programs can be much more affordable options. However, it is important to note that financial aid is not accessible for Independent Programs at this time.

UCSC Global Seminar Programs 

UCSC Global Seminars offer courses taught by UCSC Faculty during Summer Session. Cost includes: 

  • Summer Session Tuition
  • Campus Fee
  • $200 non-refundable application fee
  • Global Learning Program Cost (administrative fees, housing, excursions, international health insurance, etc.)
  • Estimated Out-of-Pocket Expenses (airfare, meals not included, etc.)

UCSC Virtual Global Internships 

UCSC Virtual Global Internships provide the opportunity to intern with a company or organization in another country, while you are at your place of residence during the summer. Students intern online for 20-30 hours per week, and take two online courses offered through UCSC Summer Session. Cost includes:

  • UCSC tuition and program fees

UCSC Exchange Programs 

UCSC Exchange programs are UCSC reciprocal exchange opportunities with institutions abroad or in the USA.
Cost includes:

  • UCSC tuition and fees
  • $200 non-refundable application fee
  • Domestic and international health insurance
  • Estimated Out-of-Pocket Expenses (airfare, meals, housing, etc.)

UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP)

UCEAP offers hundreds of programs for a semester, quarter, summer, academic year, and calendar year.
Cost includes:

  • $200 non-refundable UCSC Global Learning application fee
  • UCEAP Fees
  • UC Tuition
    • Non-Resident Tuition (if applicable)
    • Graduate Fees (if applicable)
  • Campus Fees
  • Out-of-Pocket Expenses (airfare, meals, etc.)
  • Domestic and international health insurance

To see a breakdown of costs for any program, visit UCEAP and look for the Cost under the Program Details on each program page. For UCEAP, an estimated cost for each program is available, but final costs are not released until after application deadlines.

UCDC Washington Program

UCDC is an academic internship program in which students complete an internship with a DC-based organization while earning UC credit. Visit the Cost page to learn more.

Other UC Programs

Other UC Study Abroad/Away Programs are developed and managed by other UC Study Abroad/Away offices, and program costs vary. To learn more, visit UC campus websites directly.


Independent Programs

Independent Programs are offered by organizations outside of the UC system and program costs vary. These providers generally do not charge non-resident tuition and can be more affordable for non-resident students or students who do not rely on financial aid. Financial aid from UC Santa Cruz is not currently available for Independent Programs.
