How Financial Aid Works for Global Learning Programs

Who is Eligible?

Financial aid is available for UCSC students participating in the following UC Global Learning programs:

  • UCSC Global Seminars
  • UCSC Global Internships
  • UCSC Partner Programs
  • UCEAP (UC Education Abroad Program)
  • UCDC (UC Washington Program)
  • UCCS (UC Center Sacramento)
  • Other UC study abroad/away programs

Note: Students doing independent programs (not through UC) are not eligible for UCSC financial aid but can apply for private funding.

How Aid Is Packaged

UCSC Financial Aid and Scholarships fund up to 4 quarters of study abroad (not including UCDC or UCCS). Your financial aid package is adjusted based on your program’s cost.

Aid may include:

  • Grants (e.g., Pell Grant, Cal Grant, institutional grants)
  • Student loans
  • Parent PLUS loans (if applicable)

Get a Financial Aid Estimate

Use the UCSC Study Abroad Calculator to estimate your grant aid before applying so you can get a realistic idea of how much aid you might receive and whether you might need additional funding.

Before using the Study Abroad Calculator:

You will need your Student Aid Index (SAI) and personal information from your most recent FAFSA or Dream Act (CADAA) application. Personal information must be entered into the calculator exactly as it appears on your FAFSA or CADAA.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Go to the Study Abroad Calculator section on the UCSC Financial Aid & Scholarships website

Step 2: Choose the calculator that fits your program:

  • UCSC Study Abroad Calculator – for Fall, Winter, Spring, or Academic Year programs
  • UCSC Summer Study Abroad Calculator – for Summer programs only

Step 3: Enter your personal information exactly as it appears on your FAFSA or CADAA and then click Next

Step 4: Check any boxes that apply to your situation (e.g., you’re a transfer student, first-gen, etc.). If nothing applies, just click Next

Step 5: Enter your family details based on your FAFSA or CADAA

Step 6: Enter your financial information exactly as it appears on your FAFSA or CADAA

Step 7: Review all the information you have entered to confirm its accuracy

Step 8: Use the drop-down menus to choose the relevant options for your program

Step 9: Fill in the specific program cost details:

  • “Total Estimated Program Cost Paid to Program” = What you’re billed for directly by the program (tuition, housing, etc.)
  • “Total Cost Not Paid to Program” = Out-of-pocket expenses (flights, meals, personal expenses, etc.)

Financial Aid Timeline by Program

UCSC Global Seminars & Global Internships

Student financial aid packages are available on your student portal according to the regular Summer Session schedule. For information on the eligibility requirements to receive summer financial aid, click here.

Reminder: Summer aid may differ from what you receive during the academic year (fall/winter/spring).

UCSC Partner Programs

Financial aid packages appear in your student portal. Aid disbursement timing varies and may arrive before, during, or after your program start date.

If the program starts early, be ready to cover out-of-pocket expenses until your aid disburses. Check UCSC’s financial aid disbursement schedule for details.

UCEAP (UC Education Abroad Program)

Aid packages are posted to your student portal before your program starts. Your aid is also sent to UCEAP and reflected in your UCEAP Finances account.

If the program starts early, be ready to cover out-of-pocket expenses until your aid disburses. Check UCSC’s financial aid disbursement schedule for details.

UCEAP requires a $950 first payment, but:

  • Financial aid students automatically get a deferment
  • The $950 payment is postponed until after your aid is disbursed
  • You only pay the difference if your aid doesn’t cover the full cost
  • If aid exceeds your total costs, the remainder goes directly to you
UCDC (UC Washington Program)

Financial aid for UCDC follows the standard academic year timeline. Check UCSC’s financial aid disbursement schedule for details.

If your program starts earlier than the UCSC quarter, prepare to cover early costs until aid disburses

UC Center Sacramento (UCCS)

Academic Year Session: UC Davis is responsible for awarding aid packages to participating students. To receive your aid:

  • Log into your account at studentaid.gov, choose your FAFSA for the correct academic year, and add UC Davis school code (001313) to your FAFSA
  • Inform UCSC Financial Aid that you’re attending UC Davis that term to avoid duplicate aid

Summer Session: UC Santa Cruz is responsible for awarding aid packages to participating students. To receive your aid, you must complete the Summer Intercampus Form and provide proof of enrollment in the program.
