Congratulations on your admission to UC Santa Cruz! As a Banana Slug, you have access to hundreds of global programs in over 40 countries, including domestic opportunities in the U.S.
“When I started thinking about studying abroad, I spent time with my SOCY and FMST advisors, developing an academic plan that would ensure I stay on track to graduate in four years. They helped me learn about double-counting classes and participating in external internships to satisfy GE’s. These little things added up, making it possible to spend six months abroad as a double major.”

Start Planning
As a first-year student, you have ample time to fit global learning into your academic career. With careful planning, it is possible to study abroad or away 2 or even 3 times.
We recommend that you start planning one year in advance of when you would like to go. That means if you want to study abroad or away next Summer, you should start planning the Fall prior. Once you reach sophomore standing (45 units earned), you become eligible to study abroad or away.* Applications for Summer, Fall, and Academic Year programs open up in early November.
Note: some programs require junior standing.

Start Planning
Create a plan now to fit global learning into your academic experience at UC Santa Cruz.
You can go abroad or away after you’ve completed at least 1 term at UCSC*, but you will need to plan ahead because deadlines are 4-8 months before departure. Deadlines vary by program. For Winter or Spring programs, deadlines occur between April and August the year prior. For Summer or Fall programs, deadlines occur between November and March.
Note: some programs require that at the time of applying you must already have a UC GPA or a minimum of 2 quarters completed at a UC. Check eligibility criteria carefully.
